Unit Name: Amagok Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: late Aphebian (1860 - 1750 ma)
Age Justification: None.
Province/Territory: Nunavut
Originator: Campbell and Cecile, 1975.
Type Locality:
Amagok Creek, where it enters Bathurst Inlet on the west side, 66°33'N, 107°35'W.
Distribution:
Total thickness estimated at 1,000+ m (3,280+ ft) of which 550 m (1,804 ft) is exposed in the type locality. The formation occupies the core of the major syncline whose axial plane trace passes through Bathurst Lake; it also outcrops on Banks Peninsula, some 120 km (75 mi) to the north.
Lithology:
Cream-coloured to deep red, commonly mottled arkose and muddy, ferruginous sandstones, minor pebbly conglomerate. Large scale trough and planar cross-beds are the predominant sedimentary structures.
Relationship:
Conformably overlies the Brown Sound Formation of the Goulburn Group. The top of the formation is not exposed. It is unconformably overlain by the Tinney Cove Formation and Ellice Formation.
Remark:
*Grotzinger et al. (1987) revised the Early Proterozoic stratigraphic nomenclature for Kilohigok Basin. The name Bathurst Group was proposed to embrace the previously defined Brown Sound and Amagok formations. The previous Goulburn Group was elevated to supergroup status and the name Goulburn was retained.
