Unit Name: Barlow Inlet Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Late Silurian - Early Devonian (422.9 - 397.5 ma)
Province/Territory: Nunavut
Originator: Thorsteinsson, 1980.
Type Locality:
Along an unnamed stream that enters the southeast side of Read Bay, central east coast of Cornwallis Island.
Distribution:
Occurs on southeastern Cornwallis Island, western parts of Devon Island and on Griffith and Lowther islands. The formation is about 1,400 m thick on Cornwallis Island.
Locality Data:
Thickness(m): Maximum 1400.
Lithology:
Two informal members recognized: a lower shale and an upper limestone. The lower member consists of dark grey, calcareous, silty shale with minor sandstone and nodular limestone. The upper member consists mainly of cryptocrystalline to finely crystalline, variably dolomitic and/ or argillaceous limestone that occurs in thin planar or irregular beds. Also present are: massive limestone, thick bedded crinoidal limestone, massive stromatoporoidal limestone, finely crystalline, well-bedded dolomite and medium crystalline, massive dolomite.
Relationship:
Conformably overlies the Douro and is conformably overlain by the Sophia Lake Formation. Laterally equivalent to the Devon Island Formation and part of the Cape Phillips Formation.
History:
Originally designated as Members B and C of the Read Bay Formation (Thorsteinsson, 1958). Thorsteinsson (1980) raised the Read Bay to group status and defined the Barlow Inlet Formation.
