Unit Name: Bathurst Group
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Group
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Early Proterozoic (2500 - 1600 ma)
Province/Territory: Nunavut

Originator: Grotzinger et al., 1987.

Type Locality:
The Bathurst Group is best-exposed along the southeastern margin of Bathurst Inlet (Grotzinger et al., 1987).

Distribution:
Contained within the Kilohigok Basin (Grotzinger et al., 1987).

Lithology:
The Bathurst Group contains two formations, the lower Brown Sound Formation (a thick succession of red calcareous mudstones, slump breccia, red siltstone, red arkosic and lithic sandstone and conglomerate, and minor basalt) and the overlying Amagok Formation (a thick succession of arkosic and lithic sandstoens and minor conglomerate) (Campbell and Cecile, 1981; Grotzinger et al., 1987).

Relationship:
The Bathurst Group is part of the Goulburn Supergroup. It overlies the Kuuvik Formation of the Wolverine Group (Grotzinger et al., 1987). The group is unconformably overlain by middle Proterozoic polymictic conglomerates of the Tinney Cove and Ellice formations in the Bathurst Inlet area, as well as to the northeast on Victoria Island and Kent Peninsula (Campbell and Cecile, 1976a; Campbell, 1978, 1979, 1981) (Campbell and Cecile, 1981).

History:
The name Bathurst Group was proposed by Grotzinger et al. (1987) to embrace the previously defined (Campbell and Cecile, 1981) Brown Sound and Amagok formations (Grotzinger et al., 1987).
