Unit Name: Brown Sound Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: late Aphebian (1860 - 1750 ma)
Age Justification: Contains minor sequences of unidentified and unclassified stromatolites.
Province/Territory: Nunavut
Originator: Tremblay, 1968. Modified by Campbell and Cecile, 1975, 1976a.
Type Locality:
Good reference sections would consist of composites from several areas located as follows: the B1 member - 8 km (5 mi) southeast of Goulburn Lake; the Omingmaktook member - between two lakes approx. 20 km (12 mi) southwest of Young Point; B2 member - immediately south of Amagok Creek; B3 - central Banks Peninsula. For locations refer to Campbell and Cecile, 1976b.
Distribution:
The estimated maximum thickness is approximately 2,300 m (7,546 ft). The formation outcrops in the syncline centred in the Bathurst Lake area, and on Banks Peninsula, some 120 km (75 mi) to the north, in Bathurst Inlet.
Locality Data:
Thickness(m): Maximum 2300.
Lithology:
The formation is a coarsening-upwards succession consisting of four members: basal ferruginous calcareous mudstone (B1); a chaotic intraformational slump breccia - the Omingmaktook (Olistostreme) member, muddy siltstone (B2); well-indurated red arkoses at the top (B3). Minor basalt occurs in the uppermost member, and minor sandstones in the lower member. Mud cracks, salt casts, scour channels, ripple marks and rare trough and planar cross-beds are the predominant sedimentary structures.
Relationship:
Conformably overlies the Kuuvik Formation at all localities. Is conformably overlain by the Amagok Formation, and unconformably by the Ellice and Tinney Cove Formations.
Remark:
*Grotzinger et al. (1987) revised the Early Proterozoic stratigraphic nomenclature for Kilohigok Basin. The name Bathurst Group was proposed to embrace the previously defined Brown Sound and Amagok formations. The previous Goulburn Group was elevated to supergroup status and the name Goulburn was retained.
