Unit Name: Hiccles Cove Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Middle Jurassic (175.6 - 161.2 ma)
Age Justification: Ammonites provide an age of Bathonian and Callovian (Tozer and Thorsteinsson, 1964; Stott, 1969).
Province/Territory: Arctic Offshore; Northwest Territories; Nunavut; Yukon Territory
Originator: Embry, 1984
Type Locality:
Named after Hiccles Cove, on the eastern side of Intrepid Inlet, Prince Patrick Island, the type locality is located in the Elf Jameson Bay C-31 well, were the formation is 155 m thick.
Distribution:
The Hiccles Cove Formation occurs only along the margins of the Sverdrup basin. Basinward, the formation changes facies to the shale and siltstone of the McConnell Island Formation. The formation has been recognized in central Prince Patrick, Eglinton, western Melville, Cornwall, southern Axel Heiberg, Fosheim Peninsula, Lake Hazen, northwestern Ellef Ringnes and northern Mackenzie King islands.
Locality Data:
WELL 300C317650116300; JAMESON BAY C-31. Thickness(m): Typical 155. Interval(m): From 287, To 442.
Lithology:
Consists predominantly of fine- to medium grained quartzose sandstone with interbedded shale and siltstone.
Relationship:
Conformably overlies the McConnell Island Formation, and is overlain by the Ringnes Formation. The upper contact is conformable in most areas but unconformable at the basin margins.
History:
The Hiccles Cove Formation, as established by Embry (1984b), is synonymous with the following units from previous publications: the upper portion, Jaeger Member, Savik Formation, western Ellesmere and southern Axel Heiberg (Tozer, 1963b); Units 5-8, Wilkie Point Formation, Intrepid Inlet section, Prince Patrick Island (Tozer and Thorsteinsson, 1964); the Jaeger Formation, northwestern Ellef Ringnes Island (Stott, 1969); and the medial sandstone unit, Upper Savik, Cornwall Island (Balkwill, 1983).
