Unit Name: Husky Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous (161.2 - 99.6 ma)
Age Justification: Pelecypods (Buchia) and ammonites.
Province/Territory: Northwest Territories; Yukon Territory

Originator: Jeletzky, 1967.

Type Locality:
Along the north slope of Husky Creek about 5.6 km (3.5 mi) west of Husky Channel and 1.6 km (1 mi) southeast of the top of Jurassic Butte (68 deg 02'N, 135 deg 25'W).

Distribution:
The formation ranges from 244 to 640 m (800 to 2,100 ft) or more. It is 366 to 387 m (1,200-1,270 ft) in the Aklavik range; about 244 to 274 m (800-900 ft) in the headwaters of Treeless Creek. The Husky Fm occurs in the western District of Mackenzie west of Fort Macpherson.

Lithology:
Dark to brownish-grey shale and siltstone with minor interbeds of coarser clastics. The formation has been subdivided into four informal lithologic members, listed herein in ascending order: 1) Lower member, ca. 229 m (750 ft), predominantly blackish to brownish to light grey shale, silty shale and various siltstones; 2) Arenaceous member, 12-37 m (40-120 ft), fine- to rarely coarse-grained, silty, often gritty and pebbly sandstone, gritty and pebbly conglomerate; 3) Red weathering shale, 15-23 m (50-75 ft), light to dark grey or brownish grey, often distinctly banded or pure commonly calcareous shale with numerous mostly calcareous clay ironstone bands and concretions, and 4) Upper member, 26-43 m (85-140 ft), dark to blackish-grey sandy to very sandy siltstone with lesser amounts of grey, fine- to very fine-grained silty to very silty sandstone, some dark grey to black shale.

Relationship:
This formation conformably overlies the Bug Creek Fm and the facies equivalent of the North Branch Fm. Westward, the formation is replaced laterally by the sandstones of the Porcupine River Fm (Jeletzky, 1975, 1977). This formation corresponds to the Lower Shale - Siltstone division of Jeletzky (1958b, 1960, 1961a, 1961b).
