Type Locality:
West-central Amund Ringnes Island, approximately 78 deg 17'N, 96 deg 25'W.

Distribution:
330 m at type section; 75 m at northern Ellef Ringnes Island.

Lithology:
Dark grey, silty shale with sideritic mudstone concretions to 5 m.

Relationship:
Equivalent to lower and middle Awingak Formation sandstones of eastern and southern Sverdrup Basin; Ringnes Formation lies conformably on Savik Formation, and is overlain conformably by Deer Bay Formation.

History:
The Ringnes Formation was defined in an attempt to resolve the problem of dual usage of the name, Deer Bay Formation (see entry, Deer Bay).
