Unit Name: Strand Fiord Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Late Cretaceous (99.6 - 65.5 ma)
Province/Territory: Nunavut

Originator: Souther, 1963.

Type Locality:
Kanguk Peninsula, western Axel Heiberg Island.

Distribution:
Known only from the vicinity of Strand and Expedition Fiords, western Axel Heiberg Island. In the area of Strand Fiord the thickness increases from east to west: from 90 m at the head of Strand Fiord to more than 200 m at the tip of Kanguk Peninsula.

Locality Data:
Thickness(m): Minimum 90, Maximum 200.

Lithology:
A series of flows and sills and minor amounts of pyroclastic materials. Both the sill and flow rocks are dark grey, black and greenish-grey, very fine-grained to aphanitic basalt. Vesicles, amygdules, and fractures filled with calcite, zeolites, chalcedony or malachite are locally present in the basalts. The pyroclastic deposits consist of aphanitic to subvitreous and scoriaceous basalt ejecta.

Relationship:
Conformably overlies the Bastion Ridge Formation and is conformably overlain by the Kanguk Formation. This stratigraphic position suggests a Late Cretaceous age.
