Unit Name: Trout River Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Late Devonian (385.3 - 359.2 ma)
Age Justification: Brachiopods and corals have been reported from the outcropping sections.
Province/Territory: British Columbia; Northwest Territories

Originator: Crickmay, 1953, 1957 (Name given in 1953 to 51.8 m (170 ft) of silty limestone above the Grumbler Fm on Trout River).

Type Locality:
Trout River between 16 km (10 mi) above Third Falls and 12.5 km (7.75 mi) below the Falls, i.e. 35.5 km (22 mi) by stream from Mackenzie River. Ca. 61 deg 10'N, 120 deg W.

Distribution:
Type section 52 m (174 ft). Ranges up to 91 m (300 ft) in District of Mackenzie south of 61 deg N between 120 deg and 121 deg W. Extends into Fort Nelson area of northeastern British Columbia.

Locality Data:
Thickness(m): Maximum 91, Typical 52.

Lithology:

Relationship:
The Trout River disconformably overlies the Kakisa Fm with a depositional and faunal break. Westward, it overlies and grades into the Fort Simpson Fm. It is overlain conformably by the Tetcho Fm. It is equivalent to the Sassenach Fm of the central Alberta Rocky Mountains, the upper part of the Graminia of central Alberta, the Crowfoot of southern Alberta, the Torquay of Saskatchewan and Lyleton of Manitoba.
